Each year, many people die from exposure to the cold, snow and ice related traffic accidents, heart attacks while shoveling snow, fires caused by improper heaters, or generators during power outages. These elements can make the winter months a dangerous time of the year. Some easy steps to prepare for the winter weather are: Stocking up on flashlights and batteries in your HOME and VEHICLE. Purchasing a battery powered radio or NOAA weather radio to listen for winter weather advisories Keeping your vehicle gas tank and home heating oil tank full of fuel. Purchasing extra non-perishable food for your home and your vehicle. Keeping a First Aid kit in your home and vehicle. Maintaining a significant supply of bottled water in your home. Residents who have elderly neighbors or live next to those with special needs should arrange to check on those neighbors during a storm or power outage. Despite the season, the Springfield Police Department along with the Vermont Emergency Management and the National Weather Service urge everyone to develop a Family Disaster Plan so that you are prepared for disaster. For assistance to prepare a family disaster plan the Vermont Emergency Management produces a workbook on how you and your family can prepare for most emergencies. A copy of this workbook can be down loaded by going to the Vermont emergency Management Web site at http://www.dps.state.vt.us/vem/FamilyPreparednessWorkbook2006.pdf or by calling them at 1-800-347-0488. The Springfield Police Department would like to remind everyone to BUCKLE UP as the cargo you are carrying is priceless!!!!!! |
